Hot heels roping dummy for sale

A steer roping dummy is a great alternative to the real thing, allowing a budding roper to practice. Some will use a bale of hay or some horns to stand in for the animal. This can be okay at first, but you’ll eventually want to upgrade to a dummy. Because other substitutes won’t authentically simulate the roping event.

How to heel a roping dummy

. Build and Keep Your Body Position Square

The most common mistake ropers make on a dummy is standing too far away or too far to the inside (too far right). This forces your rope’s tip down, causing you to lose coverage on the left leg.

  • The Fix: Step up close enough that you are square with the dummy’s hindquarters. Your body should mimic sitting balanced in your saddle—shoulders square, core engaged, and not leaning or hunching over.

. Match the Target and the Swing Angle

You want your swing flat and high over the dummy’s back rather than tipped steeply down. A steep angle kills your loop’s horizontal coverage.

  • The Swing: Keep your tip up. Your rope should clear the dummy’s back cleanly so that it can sweep fully through the legs from right to left.

  • The Target: Look at the left hock (the dummy’s back left ankle). If you target the left leg, your loop naturally opens up to trap the right leg as well.

. Deliver into the “Crease”

When you deliver, you aren’t just throwing the rope at the feet; you are setting a trap on the ground for the legs to step into.

  • The Mechanics: Guide your top strand to land right against the dummy’s right hock, while your bottom strand hits the ground flat.

  • The Release: Don’t let go of the rope too early. Hold onto it until your hand is almost at the target, letting your swing drive the tip all the way through the legs.

. Pull Your Slack Consistently

Even when practicing on foot, never skip the finish. As soon as your loop hits the ground and “takes,” pull your slack sharply up and out to simulate securing the legs and preparing to dally (wrapping the rope around the saddle horn).
